Daphne Fancutt Shield

33rd Annual Daphne Fancutt Shield held at Doveton on Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 January, 2024 and hosted by Waverley Tennis.

Teams from Bayside, Eastern Region, North Eastern Juniors, North Suburban Juniors, Peninsula and Waverley competed in a round robin format.

Teams were to play singles and mixed against each Association but the rain on Saturday changed our plans and we had to abandon play at 3.30 pm. on Saturday.  The two rounds of mixed already played were not counted in the team summary and for the Sunday only singles matches were played.

Winner of the Overall Excellence Award for the Event - Arrabelle Mancini (NSJTA) plus Arrabelle was presented with the Inaugural “Joseph Family Sportsmanship Trophy”. This Perpetual trophy lists the previous winners (with some blanks unfortunately) since 1992.  Cara Joseph (nee Besch) was the winner in 1995.  She spoke about the core values of the Award and the history of the Event.   The Joseph twins (5 year old girls) presented all team members with their participation award - cute as!!!

What an event weatherwise!!! plus the decision to suspend play late Saturday afternoon because of the heat left us with 30 singles matches which had been scheduled to be played on Saturday afternoon being held over until the Sunday plus there were 4 matches which had to be completed on Sunday from Saturday.  This did make it a very late finish on Sunday but only 2 players were not in attendance for the medal presentations to all players - great team spirit displayed.

Waverley had to replace our 14s No 1 boy after only one match on Saturday (Seif Saleh out (Sports Trainer’s decision) and Nathan Rato replaced Seif for the rest of the Event).  NSJTA had Florian Kostov play on Saturday but Florian was injured and unable to play on Sunday.  He was replaced by Dylan Dinh.  Also ERT had Ben D’Costa play Saturday and Salvatore Soepardi play Sunday.  The girls survived the event!!!!   Fantastic to see the injured players come along/stay to support their team throughout the weekend.

Presentations to Association winners were made by Lynton Joseph our sponsor (AATC) with his twin 4 year old daughters helping with the “Congratulations” - how cute were they!!!

Events like this only run with the huge efforts of the Waverley tennis community and volunteers A huge shout out to Lyn and Graeme Gillen and everyone else that helped out over the weekend. Congratulations to all the players and thanks to the other Associations for supporting the event and to their team managers for ensuring the event ran smoothly. Thanks also to the sponsors for the event that meant every player had a prize pack, there were additional prizes for the winning team players and also for the best performing player in each Association.
